Her father Jack was a sociology professor as was her mother Karen was an educator in special education. Both of her parents came from Seattle, Washington, but they were in Baltimore because of her father's work; he was a professor at Towson University. The family relocated back to Washington at the age of six years old. They lived in Edmonds, Washington, where her father was employed by the University of Washington and her mother taught at Seaview Elementary School. Robert is her elder brother. Robert, her younger brother has followed in the footsteps of his father and became a sociologist. He is now a professor at University of California, Davis.
